Late yesterday, Netflix took the wraps off its upcoming futuristic prison drama, Spiderhead, which launches on the streaming platform on June 17th. Starring Chris Hemsworth of The Cabin in the Woods and Top Gun: Maverick Miles Teller, the film appears to be one. An intriguing cocktail of techno-thriller, horror, sci-fi and black comedy.

Go ahead and watch the new Spiderhead trailer for yourself below:

As you can see in the footage above, Hemsworth is clearly having fun chewing up the scenes and playing a mad scientist with a questionable moral and ethical code. Not only is she busy conducting mysterious experiments on her convicts, but something even more sinister appears to be reflected by the horrific bloodstains and terrifying music at the end of the trailer.

Helmed by Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, with a screenplay by Zombieland writers Rhett Rees and Paul Wernicke, the film is based on the George Saunders short story Escape from Spiderhead.

For more details, here’s a brief official synopsis, courtesy of Netflix:

Two prisoners (Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett) form a connection while grappling with their past in a state-of-the-art peninsula run by a brilliant visionary (Chris Hemsworth), who experiments with mind-altering drugs on their subjects. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, Tron: Legacy). Based on The New Yorker short story, “Escape from Spiderhead” by George Saunders.

Spiderhead is set to release exclusively on Netflix on June 17.
