Some Roblox ages 13 and older can now use Roblox voice chat as part of a beta test in the massive sandbox game platform, which captures users’ phone numbers for verification purposes, a Roblox spokesperson said. confirmed to Gaming Strat. If implemented, it would provide an alternative form of age verification to the platform’s current requirement that users provide a photograph of identification to confirm their age.
A Roblox spokesperson shared the following via email with Gaming Strat:
“At Roblox, we believe the metaverse is for everyone, and our communication capabilities that we build should be for everyone. As part of this effort, Spatial Voice is building our long-term vision for the future of communication. There is a significant rollout in the direction. With industry-leading measures (ID verification, moderation, etc.), elite members of our community can use Spatial Voice to securely connect with others on Roblox.
“Safety is at the core of everything we do at Roblox. We maintain multiple systems to keep our users safe and secure and work tirelessly to create a platform that is safe, civil and secure for all. Welcome. It was always our intention to expand to additional methods to verify identity. Today, Spatial Voice requires ID verification – a process that involves providing a government-issued ID and a selfie.”
“Since we announced the first trial of this feature, we have been gradually expanding the group of people who have access to it. It is a deliberate process, and through this we have achieved our high security standards. Have gained insight on how to scale it up while maintaining and expanding with new options like phone verification.
Roblox introduced voice chat in November 2021. It’s only available to users 13 and older, and the platform requires users to verify their age through some sort of identifying photo. However, this process can provide a significant hurdle for those who do not have such an identity or who do not wish to be involved in the upload process. Without Roblox voice chat functionality, older players turn to Discord and other services.
Eliminating the need to provide a photographic image could allow Roblox users to spend more time on the platform as they no longer need to switch between third-party services to communicate with each other. Over the years, Roblox has gained traction among older users and has managed to retain the users who have grown up with the platform. This changing demographic also means that it is necessary for Roblox to continue to find ways to engage its old player base, with the widespread reach of voice chat being one example of such a move.
Enabling greater access to voice chat could provide more opportunities that Roblox’s push into the metaverse will support. This could foster a greater sense of community among players who have relied primarily on in-game text chat and provide more opportunities for game creators to develop games that benefit from vocal interaction. These can include among us-style games, role-playing games, and shooting games that use proximity chat features. While it appears there is no surefire way to access the beta, some people report receiving notifications as soon as they enter a game with chat functionality.
You can find out if you can access the voice chat functionality by going to ‘Settings’. If the feature is visible, you can switch the button to enable it. Enabling this will take you to a pop-up screen, allowing the user Roblox to collect, use and store voice recordings for safety and restraint. By checking the required box and pressing ‘Enable’, the player will have access to voice chat in all games that allow it. Like many Roblox beta features, such as the new ‘trade’ button in the item reseller list, this process will undergo rigorous testing and feedback. It will not be available to all users until it is implemented.
