Splatoon 3 sales clear 3.45 million in 3 days

Splatoon 3 sales are breaking records for Nintendo. according to companyThe packaged and digital sales of the recently released Squid Kid shooter have crossed 3.45 million units in just three days.

Nintendo says that number breaks the first-ever three-day sales record in Japan for any Nintendo Switch game in the platform’s history. Game Data Library, a site that compiles Japanese sales data, suggests that Splatoon 3’s sales numbers could be the biggest Japanese game launch ever, regardless of platform. For the record, the biggest Switch launch ever in Japan prior to Splatoon 3 was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold 3.3 million units in its first week.

Splatoon 2 was a particularly big hit in Japan and was also the 5th best-selling Switch game in Japan as of the end of March this year. With Splatoon 3 being largely identical, it’s a safe bet that it will impress audiences. Splatoon 3 does make a few changes, though. In addition to two new types of weapons and several new special weapons, it moves the locale from Inkopolis to Plattsville.

The Splatcast host of the hook was replaced by the Deep Cut trio. Splatfest itself also became a three-way affair, adding a chaotic three-team battle mode to the community-based competition. Fans got a taste of that chaos in the first Splatfest world premiere demo, which opened ahead of launch. The community was divided between teams representing Rock, Paper and Scissors. Team Rock won the day in front of Deep Cut member Shiver.

Splatfest World Premiere results are out and #teamrock is crushed! Congratulations to the winners!

Many thanks to everyone for participating, and we’ll see you in Plattsville when #splatoon3 Launch on 9/9! pic.twitter.com/NorOFbhYDk
